October 14 - 17, 2013
This year, we had an entire week off and wanted to make the most of it. We certainly did after we found a deal for the Viceroy in Maldives for three nights. Viceroy is located on Vagaru Island on Shaviyani Atoll in the Northern area of Maldives. Once we flew into Male, the capital, we had to take a seaplane ride for about 50 minutes to get to the island. During this season, the weather is pretty rough. I was a little concerned to get on the plane with the rain but managed to step in with about six other Emirati guys who would be staying at the resort as well.
We had a beautiful villa on the beach with our own private pool. I can now see why this is the perfect honeymoon destination and will remember to come back. We ate breakfast every morning in the main restaurant as it was included in our rate. Everything was made to order...fruit, he cut it up for us right there; pancakes...made them for us right there.
The service at Viceroy were unlike anything I've ever experienced. The staff were so welcoming since the time we got on the island. They met us at the seaplane and took us to the island by boat, welcome drinks on the wharf, brought us to our villa and showed us how to work everything inside. We had a welcome banquet on the first night with the General Manager. A Maldivian band and dancers performed and the drinks were flowing. Each morning, the staff knew what we wanted and brought it out to us. We loved feeding the fish each morning, so they brought us rolls in creative ways. I can not thank the staff enough for the hospitality they gave us. I will always remember it!
On the second day, I woke up and went to spend the morning at the spa with an amazing Balinese massage...best massage I have ever gotten (and I just got back from Bali). The villas were on the water and it was relaxation at its best. After the spa, I went to meet Symunek at the main pool. I didn't think too much about the sun so I just put on SPF 15. BIG MISTAKE. Later that day, the pain set in. I had a terrible sunburn...the worst I've ever had. I should've looked at the map to realize that we were right by the Equator.
We tried to scuba dive but the weather didn't cooperate with us after a few tries. Then we tried to snorkel on the last day and the water was too rough to go out so they cancelled it. Just something to look forward to next time.
Business class on British Airlines...short flight but still nice!
View of the islands of Maldives from the plane.
At the airport, we got picked up in a Mercedes van and taken to the sea plane waiting area for Viceroy

After dinner, we came back to swim in our pool and found a crab. We were just a little concerned and had a friend pull him out so he wouldn't bite us.

The sunburn actually looked comfortable here...must have been the wine
The writing on the loungers by the pool-at first, I thought this might be the Maldivian language, but no. Still a nice design.

Recently, I saw that Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively were at Viceroy for New Years. It looks like more people will be catching onto this hideaway soon...
Looking forward to my next trip to Maldives:)
